Legacy Summer 2011 Road Resurfacing

By now you have surely noticed the road resurfacing on the main thoroughfares within Legacy. We spoke with a representative from the Town of Markham\'s Road Maintenance department to get more information. In response to questions and concerns sent to us by Legacy residents, and to satisfy our own curiosity, we learned the following:

The resurfacing treatment within Legacy is complete for 2011. Only the highly traveled routes within Legacy were treated, as they are subject to the most use.

Our roads were selected based on their high use (850+ homes sharing three main streets in and out of Legacy) and that they are about 10 years old.

This treatment is designed to be applied to roads before they show major physical damage and become candidates for full re-paving. The light resurfacing can extend the useful life of the asphalt by 7 to 10 years, at a cost that is significantly less than complete re-pavement.

The treatment is designed to improve traction and skid resistance for vehicular traffic. This unfortunately creates a rougher ride for bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, etc. We were advised that a year of "seasoning", including winter snow removal, will dislodge some of the stones and make for a slightly smoother and less noisy ride.

There is never a good time for actual application of the treatment. Several residents complained about inadequate notification, and were inconvenienced by being trapped in their driveways while the treatment set (which takes 20-30 minutes on a sunny day). The town does its best to provide advance notification:

- Informational flyers are distributed door to door the day before.

- As a matter of practice, the road crew maintenance workers are discouraged from engaging residents directly. Rather, the town provides an on-site representative and York Regional Police to assist with controlling traffic and speaking with residents during the treatment.

- The town representatives do not have bandwidth to provide same-day notification (door-knocking, etc).
